A Nobel Peace Prize? Give it back!
Obama has been awarded the Nobel Peace prize. Yes, you read that right. It’s quite shocking seeing the man has not done anything to actually achieve peace. In all fairness to him, he hasn’t been in office long enough to. The Nobel prize is suppose to be an award of accomplishments. I would hardly consider the promise of “hope and change” to be an accomplishment. But then again, the Nobel prize is hardly what it use to be. In 2007 Al Gore was awarded the “peace prize” for his efforts in global warming. What does environmental activism have to do with peace? As many political pundits have noted, the Nobel committee is using the award more as an anti-Bush statement than any actual reward for accomplishments. This latest move is more of a statement of global approval for the US ending the Bush years.
So if Obama is really a noble person, he should give the award back. If he does this, it would buy him a lot of respect in my book. Think about it, would you accept an award you did not deserve? Let’s say you drew a picture of a car. It’s a cool car that you claim could one day be solar powered and go 200 mph. You take your artwork and send it into many automotive publications saying that you would one day like to build your car. The next thing you know you get a call from MotorTrend saying they are awarding you the prestigious Car of the Year award. Do you accept the award? I’m sure some people would, but the honest thing to do would be to decline the award or send it back. It would be one thing if it was a design award, but you didn’t actually build the car. Accepting an award for the best “production” car of the year would be a lie and a fraud.
Will Obama accept the award? Given the ego he has shown, my guess is that he will. If he does, any remaining respect I have for him will be gone. However, should he decline it, I will give him credit and respect for his noble decision.
Followup: The President has announced that his is going to accept the award. It’s shameful that we have a leader who accepts awards for accomplishments he has yet to earn or achieve. What a fraud! I have no respect for him.
Followup: I guess all this is based on what your definition of “peace” is. If you define “peace” as weakening America’s stance in the world, as many in Europe would like to see, then yes… Obama has accomplished something in the name of peace. In that sense, he deserves his prize. If you define peace as freedom from tyranny, then this is indeed a sad day.
