Awesome high protein yogurt that tastes good!

I just had to write a post about this yogurt that I tried recently because it’s not only yummy good tasting, but it’s good for you too! I read an article recently that talked about Icelandic residents diets and how they as a country are some of the leanest people in the world as a whole. The article mentioned that they way they made yogurt there was particularly special because they strained all the fat out of it, yet it still retained almost all of the good elements of the yogurt. I was able to track the yogurt down at the Whole Foods store on Sand Lake Rd. here in Orlando (the one in Winter Park does not carry it) and picked up all the flavors I could find of it.

My first initial impression of the blueberry flavor was BAM! It was PACKED with rich, thick flavor that nearly knocked me over! I had to eat it with little spoonfulls as the flavor was just so strong and thick. It’s a very different tasting yogurt as it’s VERY thick and has hardly any water content in it at all.  I wasn’t a huge fan of the passionfruit and pomogranet flavor or blueberry after trying them, but the orange & ginger that I had yesterday? Out of this world I tell you!! I was amazed at the subtle yet noticeable taste of orange and ginger without it being too overpowering. There was even little bits of both orange and ginger in the yogurt which gave it a delightful texture and chewing experience.

What makes this yogurt so different is the amount of protein it is per serving. It’s very hard to find products in general that have a high protein content outside of your eggs, meats, legumes/beans, etc. I personally think most people don’t eat enough protein in general and/or the right balance of proteins to carbohydrates. This is a flavorable way to get some good lean protein in a flavorable form that you can do many things with. And because it has Agave nectar to sweeten the yogurt, your body can use that better than a more processed or “simple” sugar source (which gives you a blood sugar spike).

The name of this yogurt is “siggi’s – Icelandic style skyr strained non-fat yogurt”

The nutritional info on this yogurt if you are interested is as follows for the orange & ginger flavor…..16g of Protein, 12g of Carbs (10g of sugar), 0g of Fat, and 120 Calories. I love reading the label as it’s chocked full of information as follows:

    All natural
    Milk from grass fed cows
    No aspartame
    No sucralose
    No gelatin
    No articficial colorings
    No preservatives

Skyr is the name for thick yogurt in Icelandic. It is high in protein and low in fat. We sweeten our skyr lightly using agave syrup, a natural low glycemic sweetner. Non of our products contain any of those dreaful artificial sweetners. We only use milk from farmers who do not use growth hormones like rBGH. I hope you enjoy. Siggi
