• Stupid commercials

    It seems like commercials on TV are getting stupider by the day. An ever increasing number of ads are so unintelligible that I have no clue what they are trying to say or what message they are trying to convey about their product. For other commercials, I wonder if they advertiser even knows what they are trying to say. Worse, maybe they do and they don’t care.

    For example, tonight an ad for Best Buy pops on. The “technician” tells a just touching story about a young couple getting married. They don’t have enough money for the wedding, so the groom-to-be sells off his NFL seasons tickets to raise money to help cover the costs. To thank him for his sacrifice, the bride-to-be buys him a 60″ big screen TV to watch the games at home.

    If this isn’t on over the top consumerist message, I don’t know what is! Does this make any sense to you? They don’t have enough money to pay for a wedding and have to sell stuff off to raise money… yet… they have no problem dropping down some fat cash to buy a big flat panel TV. Sounds like a loosing proposition to me. I don’t know how much seasons tickets run, but at best they are down the cost of the TV. There is a strong possibility that the deal lands them more in the hole. Unless… and this could be the hidden message… they sold the tickets for cash and paid for the TV on the card. Hmmm… possibly a subliminal message here on the part of Best Buy:

    “It doesn’t matter if you can afford it or not, you should go into debt for the luxuries you deserve”

    Sometimes it pays to stop and think about the messages being conveyed by that box in front of you. Is there any wonder why the world’s economies are in a mess? Maybe we need bit of an economic depression to snap the county out of their consumerist material addictions.

      Since we are on the subject of commercials and content:
      Did anyone see the commercials played during the superbowl?

      The chester cheetah commercial. . . . .that was pathetic. And it is supposed to be a kid’s snack.

      There are a lot of young incoming marketeers out there, because that stuff was NOT funny or thought-provoking at all.

      Bring back the office linebacker! That makes me laugh.
